WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — The head of Utah's state police says he plans to assign an investigator to keep an eye on refugees settling in the state. Department of Public Safety Commissioner Keith Squires says that the detective would join the team of state workers who help refugees find housing and work after coming to Utah. The step comes after Utah's governor called for a review of the vetting process for refugees from Syria and elsewhere following the Nov. 13 terror attacks in Paris.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Investigators are trying to piece together what happened to NFL quarterback Jay Cutler's brother-in-law, whose hasn't been heard from since his car was found abandoned more than a week ago near a remote dirt road in Central Utah. Authorities say Michael Cavallari lives in Southern California and was arrested on an allegation of making threats there Nov. 23. Four days later, a rancher found Cavallari's car with its engine on and the air bag deployed in Grand County.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The EPA is set to downgrade northern Utah's air quality designation next month after three years of dirty winter air. Now environmental groups are asking the federal agency to require the state to come up with a plan to clean up the air by June 2017, not December 2018 as is being proposed.

PAYSON, Utah (AP) — A teenager has died on his 14th birthday when he was hit by two cars while crossing the street on the way to school in Payson. KUTV reports that police say Adam Renik was struck early yesterday and died at the scene. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
