MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is standing by his proposal calling for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States." Trump told CNN this morning that, "We have no choice but to do exactly what I said" until this country knows what is going on. Trump has come under sharp criticism from fellow GOP candidates and prominent Muslims across the word. Former talk show host Bassem Youssef tweeted — quote — "I didn't know Donald Trump was fluent in Nazi."
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The U.N. refugee agency says it's concerned about "the level of rhetoric" in the U.S. election campaign on issues like barring Muslims from entry or stopping resettlements of Syrian refugees. UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming says the U.S. has the world's largest refugee resettlement program, and Syrians are "the most scrutinized population." Meanwhile, UNHCR is urging Jordan's government to allow in around 12,000 people who are stranded just inside Syria after fleeing intensified violence.
FRAKNFORT, Ky. (AP) — Matt Bevin has taken the oath to become the 62nd governor of Kentucky. Bevin was sworn in during a private ceremony just after midnight in the state Capitol. He succeeds Democrat Steve Beshear, who could not seek re-election because of term limits. Bevin is the state's ninth Republican governor in its 223-year history and the second since 1971. Later today, there'll be a parade and a public swearing-in ceremony on the Capitol steps.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland prosecutors are preparing to rest their case against Officer William Porter, one of six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was arrested April 12 and died a week later following a spinal injury. Porter's attorneys will begin calling their own witnesses to the stand in the coming days. Their client is charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — NFL player Michael Vick is heading to the Pennsylvania statehouse today to lobby legislators on a bill that would help protect pets left in hot cars. The bill would allow first responders to break into cars to rescue dogs or cats in distress without fear of being held liable for damages. In 2007, Vick pleaded guilty to being part of a dogfighting ring and served 21 months in prison.
