DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Mario Moody had 20 points and 12 rebounds as Bethune-Cookman defeated South Carolina State 69-54 Monday night, winning a conference opener for the first time since 2011.
The Wildcats (4-4, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) led from start-to-finish — beginning the game on a 10-0 run — with four players reaching double-figure scoring.
Randy Holmes and Diamante Lewis scored 13 points each, and Quinton Forrest added 10. Holmes grabbed 11 rebounds and Lewis led with three 3-pointers. Moody and LaRon Smith each had three blocked shots.
Tashombe Riley scored 12 to lead S.C. State (4-5, 1-1). Eric Eaves added 11 and Ed Stephens 10.
Bethune-Cookman built a 27-13 lead on a Jordan Potts basket in the paint with 4:16 left in the first half and neither team would score again before halftime.
Bethune-Cookman had only four more rebounds, but it outscored the Bulldogs 36-24 on points in the paint and 26-13 on second-chance points.
