CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State will require all prospective transfer students to disclose whether they are ineligible to re-enroll at a previous school because of conduct.
Undergraduate and graduate students seeking admission must disclose ineligibility at any school they've attended in the past seven years, Oregon State announced on Monday. The move strengthens a policy already in place that denies admission to students who are ineligible to return to their former school.
"We are committed to combatting sexual violence in society and to improving safety on the Oregon State University campus," Oregon State President Ed Ray said in a statement. "This is an important step to strengthen the university's admission policies for transfer students related to conduct that is not consistent with creating a safe and inclusive community at Oregon State."
Ray is also encouraging other Pac-12 universities to adopt the same policy. The school specified that the new policy applies to all students, and not just student-athletes. Oregon State continues to follow all NCAA regulations regarding student-athlete transfers.
Students who cannot return to a previous school because of academic reasons will be considered if they meet the school's minimum requirements. All transfers who are denied admission have the right to appeal.
"The bottom line is, that if students seeking to transfer to OSU are ineligible at another institution because of student conduct violations, they automatically will be declined admission to Oregon State," said Steve Clark, vice president for university relations and marketing.
