CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) — Investigators say an inmate who was found unresponsive in her cell at the Montezuma County jail in southwest Colorado died from complications of chronic alcohol abuse.
The Cortez Journal reports (http://goo.gl/OwCGvz ) medical examiner Dr. Robert Kurtzman ruled that 47-year-old Dani Miller died of natural causes and that alcoholism complications were the immediate cause of death.
Miller was found unresponsive and not breathing in her cell Oct. 24, a day after she was booked for failing to appear on assault and harassment charges.
Jail officials say she was highly intoxicated when she was brought in. Her blood alcohol content was 0.289 percent, more than three times the legal limit for driving.
Authorities say Miller was checked on at least 16 times — every half hour — while she was in the jail.
