NEW ORLEANS — Ten days after being signed by the New Orleans Pelicans, Jimmer Fredette has been waived, the team announced Thursday.
Fredette scored 2 total points in four games with the Pelicans. Fredette had played in 50 games for the Pelicans in the 2014-15 season, but was not re-signed by the team during the summer.
Fredette was signed under an exception created by the NBA's hardship rule, which states that teams are allowed to apply for an additional roster spot after four players miss at least three consecutive games; however, under the hardship rules, the team can only have the additional roster spot until one of the injured players return.
In the 2010-11 NCAA basketball season, Fredette was one of college basketball's best players while playing for BYU, winning the Naismith Award, AP Player of the Year, and others.
With the release, Fredette will likely return to the Westchester Knicks, the D-League franchise that owns his rights after drafting him second overall in last month's D-League draft.
