SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawyers will defend a key part of the state's law banning polygamy when they appear next year before a federal appeals court in Denver.
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday scheduled a Jan. 21 hearing in the case.
Utah is appealing a 2013 ruling that struck down a key part of Utah's law, bringing the state in line with laws in other states.
Utah's law was challenged by stars of the reality TV show "Sister Wives."
A federal judge in 2013 overturned part of the law forbidding cohabitation, arguing it violated the polygamous family's freedom of religion.
Bigamy - holding marriage licenses with multiple partners - remains illegal.
An attorney for Kody Brown and his four wives says the family is prepared to take the legal fight to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
