COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Protesters at the University of Missouri's flagship campus in Columbia are claiming victory, but say they're not done yet. The school system president and campus chancellor stepped down in the face of charges that not enough was being done to fight racism. The protesters plan to push Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, the university system's governing board and the Columbia campus faculty council for more changes.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. businesses are responding to a robust rebound in sales. Businesses at the wholesale level boosted their stockpiles in September by the largest amount in three months. The Commerce Department says stockpiles at the wholesale level increased 0.5 percent in September, the biggest increase since a 0.7 percent rise in June. Inventories had risen 0.3 percent in August.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Records obtained by The Associated Press show that a Romanian nightclub fire which killed at least 48 people was preceded by three blazes in the same building. The findings raise new questions about whether authorities could have prevented the tragedy, which ended up toppling the Romanian government.

BERLIN (AP) — Helmut Schmidt, the chancellor who guided West Germany through economic turbulence and Cold War tensions, has died at age 96. The German weekly Die Zeit (dee zyt), of which Schmidt was a co-publisher, says he died at his house in Hamburg. Schmidt was a center-left Social Democrat who led West Germany from 1974 to 1982.

MADRID (AP) — Legendary New Orleans musician and composer Allen Toussaint has died after suffering a heart attack following a concert he'd performed in Spain. He was 77. Toussaint penned such classics as "Working in a Coal Mine" and "Lady Marmalade."
