PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's only law school is joining forces with a Providence-based law firm to give free legal help to veterans who have been denied disability benefits and can't afford to appeal.
Roger Williams University School of Law and Chisholm, Chisholm and Kilpatrick announced the initiative on Monday.
Roger Williams Law Dean Michael Yelnosky says they hope to serve society and also educate students with the clinic. He says no group is more deserving than people who have been disabled as a result of military service.
Under the initiative, Roger Williams students will be assigned to represent military veterans who are appealing their denials to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, a former Army Ranger, says it will help veterans effectively navigate the legal process.
