PROVO — When Marilyn Hayes smells the rain, sees the light and shade on mountains or hears cattle lowing, she is inspired.

Hayes has been creating art since she was a child watching her mother create art. With a contemporary style and her own style, she creates oil, watercolor and landscape paintings.

"I love nature … I love color, I love the way light and shadow play together," Hayes said.

Her source of inspiration, she said, is God. When she steps outside and sees and feels everything that's been created and the intricacies of nature, it's inspiring to her.

"There's times when I feel like I … feel the spirit of the place where I'm painting so strongly that my brush is painting with that feeling of the spirit," Hayes said. "It's just hard to explain."

The artist was raised on a farm and cattle ranches and was helping out since she was a young child. The things she did nurtured her love for art and nature, and it has grown as she's gotten older.

She loves everything about creating art.

"I feel whole, it helps me feel kind of part of a giant network of God's creations and it helps me feel … part of the whole," Hayes said.

The artist also derives inspiration from another Utah artist, LeConte Stewart. She said he'd done beautiful work, and she enjoys getting inspiration from his art.

Hayes, the secretary of the Utah County Arts Board, frequently participates in art shows, including galleries at the Utah County Health & Justice Building, where she sells her art.

Hayes also does photography as a hobby. She is not a professional, but has won some ribbons, she said.
