Meanwhile, diplomats in Vienna representing 17 countries and the European Union have agreed to launch a broad new peace attempt to gradually end Syria's long civil war.
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania's interior minister says an explosion in a Bucharest nightclub has left 26 people dead and 88 hospitalized with injuries. The blast happened Friday night at a club in downtown Bucharest, a city of 3 million people. A TV station -- Digi 24 -- cities witnesses who say the explosion came after a spark on a stage where a band was performing ignited some of the polystyrene decor.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles-area doctor has been convicted of second-degree murder in the deaths of three patients who overdosed on painkillers she prescribed. A dozen of Dr. (shee-yoo) Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng's patients died, including one who overdosed in her office. The prosecution is a rare murder case against a physician.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A judge in Salt Lake City has denied an appeal from a Utah death row inmate who argued that his sentence of death by firing squad is cruel and unusual punishment. The court ruled that the U.S. Supreme Court has never overturned a state's chosen method of execution as cruel and unusual. Utah recently approved the use of a firing squad as a backup if lethal injection drugs are unavailable.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky grand jury has subpoenaed the publisher of the book by an escort that alleges former Louisville basketball staffer Andre McGee hired her and other dancers to strip and have sex with Cardinals recruits and players. IBJ Book Publishing says it has received a subpoena. But a lawyer for the author, Katina Powell, says his client has not.
