The leaves have changed and the temperature is dropping. Snow storms are on the horizon. With the change of season it's easy to trade your runs in for a blanket on the couch. This can spell disaster for your wellness plan. The problem is if you get off your routine then you might not get back on track.

Here are four ways to keep you moving during the winter months.

1. Be consistent

Make a plan for during the season. No matter if you are an active person or looking to start a new routine. Figure out how will be fit during the winter months. Dan Fey, exercise physiologist at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, commented on the notion of making a plan.

"Easier said than done, I completely understand, but, you'll find so much more success and a passion for what you are doing when you are consistent. Don't set an unrealistic goal, but something you think is manageable. Try two to three times a week and then adjust it accordingly."

2. Embrace the season

The change of season brings new activities. You can head up the mountains with your skis, snowboard or snowshoes. Take advantage of the snow and burn large quantities of calories in the process. Even visit some outdoor and indoor skating rinks for your enjoyment.

You also don't need to depend on facilities or equipment. It can be as simple as joining family and friends for sledding in the park. Build a snowman or snow angels. During the holiday season you can walk around and see the festive lights and decorations.

3. Workout indoors

It's hard to want to go for a run or a bike ride considering it's dark when you leave the office. So the better option is to move the workouts from the bitter cold into the climate-controlled indoors.

The gym provides numerous opportunities during the winter months to get you moving. Treadmills, elliptical machines, stair climbers, there is a wide variety of equipment available for your use.

If working out alone in the gym is not for you then there are typically group activities available based on the facility. You can grab a yoga mat, join a spinning class, play some racquetball or go for a swim. These are just a few options for you to keep your workouts fun and fresh.

4. Stay safe

It's hard to stay active when you are hurt and winter brings its own unique pitfalls. Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather. Avoid frostbite and hypothermia by utilizing base layers, gloves and winter socks. Look to the moisture wicking layers to keep you drier and warmer.

Another pitfall is one that's easy to overlook: dehydration. If you are just a little dehydrated then it hurts performance and can cause muscle strains. That is only the beginning of the troubles if you let yourself go too long without hydrating properly.

Staying hydrated usually takes a concerted effort in cold environments, just as it does in the heat. So even when you are not feeling the heat – you still need to be drinking just the same.

Winter does not have to be a time to hibernate. It's a time to embrace the season and all the snow, the festive atmosphere and the beauty of our mountains. Being fit and active is an all-season event.
