KAMAS — A man was killed and two others were arrested after a rollover accident near Kamas Saturday, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
Just before 4 a.m., a silver Nissan Titan was traveling eastbound when the driver lost control and spun sideways, striking an embankment on the road before overturning on state Route 150 about 2 miles east of Kamas, according to UHP Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas. An occupant of the vehicle, 28-year-old Larry Paul, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the crash. Paul was pronounced dead at the scene, Lucas said.
"There was (sic) a bunch of lights and we heard this humongous bang and crash," said area resident Steve Staff. "There's a truck in my driveway on its roof and nobody in it. We started looking around and there ended up being a boy over here in my bushes over here."
Staff said there was debris scattered along Mirror Lake Highway, including beer cans.
The two other occupants of the Nissan left the scene of the crash, UHP said. Officers later located the driver of the vehicle, Randon Robertson, 20, and passenger, Logan Brown, 18, at a home in Kamas. Robertson was taken to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.
Upon his release, troopers said they planned to book him into jail for investigation of automobile homicide, possession of alcohol by a minor and leaving the scene of an injury crash. Brown was booked into the Summit County Jail for investigation of obstruction of justice and possession of alcohol by a minor, the UHP reported.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the accident and that may have been why the men fled the scene. Troopers said they don't have any evidence that the the men tried to help Paul.
UHP said Paul was in Utah visiting relatives. Troopers did not know where he was from, but said he has family in the Kamas area and had only been in Utah for a couple of days before the crash.
Initial calls to police came in as reports of reckless driving and later calls reported the accident, Lucas said.
