SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City set a new heat record for Oct. 14 by reaching 82 degrees Wednesday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Glen Merrill said Wednesday's high of 82 at the Salt Lake City International Airport surpassed the previous record of 81, set in 1958.

The record is the latest indication of an unusually hot early fall in northern Utah. Merrill says the last 30 days since a cool spell ended in mid-September are the hottest on record for those dates.

The forecast calls for cooler temperatures this weekend. Merrill says two storms are expected to hit the region, dropping high temperatures to the low to mid-60s early next week.
