BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter has appointed Magistrate Michael Reardon to the judge's bench in 4th District Court.

Reardon has served as a magistrate in Ada County since 2004, and he presided over the Ada County Mental Health Court as a pro-tem judge between 2010 and 2014. He will be succeeding Judge Cheri Copsey, who is retiring.

Magistrates typically handle lower-level criminal cases like misdemeanors and traffic tickets, juvenile court cases and small civil or family law cases. District judges typically handle high-stakes civil lawsuits and felony criminal cases.

Otter said in a prepared statement that Readon is talented and committed to public service, and that he understands Idaho issues.

Readon said he is both humbled and grateful for the appointment.
