WEST VALLEY CITY — Two people were injured by gunfire in an incident sparked by road rage Thursday evening in West Valley City, police said.

A 19-year-old woman was hit in the leg and a juvenile boy was also hit in the shooting at the intersection of 3100 South and 4300 West, said West Valley Police Lt. Dalan Taylor.

The victims are siblings and were in a van with their parents and two other siblings when they were shot around 5:50 p.m., Taylor said. Both were taken to a nearby hospital, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The two drivers reportedly got out of their vehicles and exchanged words at 3100 South and Bangerter Highway, then started driving again going westbound, shortly before the shooting.

"Our suspect was angry over our victim's driving for some reason," Taylor said.

The car the victims were inside pulled into a center turning lane to allow the other car to go around them and was attempting to turn left when someone fired shots from the passing vehicle, striking the van several times, Taylor said.

The man driving the shooting victims' vehicle had "decided he had enough and he was going to turn … in hopes the suspect would just drive by," the lieutenant said.

West Valley police are looking for the shooter and their vehicle. It is described as a dark grey or black compact four-door car with with red rims and a red spoiler. It continued to drive west on 3100 South after the shooting, Taylor said.

The shooter is a Hispanic or Polynesian man in his 30s, according to Taylor. He was reportedly the only person in his vehicle.

The confrontation began near 3100 South and 3450 West.
