SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah state Rep. Norm Thurston is considering sponsoring legislation that would eliminate the state's safety inspection requirements for cars. Thurston tells The Salt Lake Tribune that the current system can be a burden to lower-income people who tend to own older cars that need more inspections. A recent congressional report found no clear evidence that car safety inspection programs reduce accidents.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A panel of Utah lawmakers will hold the first open hearing next week on a new Medicaid expansion plan that a small group of GOP officials have crafted in closed-door meetings this summer. Republican legislators who drafted the plan released some details about the proposal last night, including a list of taxes that doctors and others would pay to fund the program. Gov. Gary Herbert plans to call a special session this year for lawmakers to consider the new plan.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — School officials are defending their handling of an incident this week where a young girl's parents say she became ill because she was not allowed to use her inhaler. A Jordan School District spokeswoman says school staff is trained not to allow students to use prescription medicine without official notification from parents. She says 9-year-old Emma Gonzales' parents had not given notification. KSTU reports the girl is now fine.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Drivers for the ride-hailing company Uber are now legally picking up passengers at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Airport officials say they've given the smartphone-powered company permission to start operating its UberX service as part of a one-year pilot program.
