ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former University of Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman has been named the new head of the Association of American Universities.

The University of Michigan says the association of 60 U.S. and two Canadian public and private research schools made the announcement Tuesday that Coleman will be its president beginning next June.

Coleman stepped down last year as Michigan's president after 12 years leading the Ann Arbor school. She also served from 1995-2002 as University of Iowa president.

She was chair of the Association of American Universities in 2011-12.

The association focuses on funding for research, research policy issues, and graduate and undergraduate education.
