Five Utes were named to the 2006 MWC Preseason All-Conference Football Team and Utah was picked to finish third in a poll of Mountain West Conference media members at the annual MWC Football Preview in San Diego, July 17.

Eric Weddle, first-team all-MWC a year ago and the 2005 MWC Defensive Player of the year, was picked to repeat on both fronts in the 2006 preseason media poll. He was joined on the 2006 preseason team by receiver Brian Hernandez, offensive linemen Tavo Tupola and Jason Boone and returner Brent Casteel. Utah’s five picks were tied for the most with TCU and Brigham Young.

Those were also the media’s top three preseason teams. Defending MWC champion TCU was picked to win the 2006 MWC title by collecting 213 points and 16 first place votes. Brigham Young edged the Utes for second, earning 192 points and five first-place votes to Utah’s 188 points and three first-place votes.

The MWC Media Preview will conclude on July 18. The highlight on Tuesday expects to be MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson’s State of the Conference Address. Thompson will speak on the latest information regarding the league’s television contract with CSTV and The mtn.
