Budapest (dpa) - Police arrested two animal rights activists outside a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Budapest Tuesday after they attempted to lock themselves up in a tiny chicken coop dressed in skimpy bikinis in protest the food chain's treatment of chickens.

Police were waiting for the two women outside the restaurant and manhandled them into waiting cars amidst a scrum of journalists and onlookers.

The two women shouted "Boycott KFC" as they were led away. An officer at the scene said the women were arrested because they had not announced the demonstration in advance.

"This action was organized as part of our international protest against the suffering of the 850 million chickens that KFC kills every year," said Jodi Ruckley of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the organization that arranged the protest, adding that the birds were kept in cramped, dirty conditions.

Hungary is largely populated with devoted carnivores and the demonstration left onlookers bemused, with most seeming to believe the women were protesting against the taste of KFC's products rather than its ethics.
