FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — DTE Energy Co. says the reactor at the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant in southeastern Michigan will remain shut down as refueling and maintenance work is moved up.
The manual shutdown took place Sept. 13 due to a problem with a system used to cool auxiliary equipment at the plant along Lake Erie in Monroe County's Frenchtown Township.
Vito Kaminskas, Fermi 2 site vice president, tells the Monroe News (http://bit.ly/1WkD6j6 ) that since the plant already was shut down it "enables us to more efficiently use the time and resources necessary to begin work we had already planned" to complete starting this month.
An outage for refueling and maintenance at the Detroit-based utility's plant takes place every 18 months. More than 1,500 supplemental workers are at Fermi 2 to support the work.
