ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago school district has decided to keep closed three schools where elevated levels of Legionella bacteria was discovered in the buildings' cooling systems.
Elgin School District U46 officials say out of an abundance of caution, Eastview Middle School, Larkin High School and the Educational Services Center, housing Gifford Street middle and high schools and the Central Schools Program, will remain closed Thursday.
Officials say work is continuing to clean the cooling towers at the sites. All other U46 schools and facilities will remain open.
The schools and the district offices were evacuated and closed Wednesday after Legionella bacteria was discovered during air quality testing.
CEO Tony Sanders says district officials have no evidence students have been exposed to anything harmful. He says officials expect to reopen these sites Friday after the cleaning process is repeated.
