LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say the mother of a 2-year-old boy who accidentally drowned in a hot tub last month in northwest Las Vegas faces one felony charge of child abuse and neglect.

Las Vegas police said 35-year-old Vanessa Loftis turned herself in Thursday.

Authorities say Israel Hall was with Loftis at an apartment swimming pool in the 4600 block of North Rainbow Boulevard before he and other children went to the hot tub. When the others left, police say the child slipped into a deep part, struggled for minutes before losing consciousness and was found by his mother more than 15 minutes later.

The Clark County Coroner determined Hall's drowning was accidental.

Loftis doesn't have a court-appointed attorney yet. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5 in Las Vegas Justice Court.
