TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Jorge Labarga is recovering from cancer surgery at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Labarga had a kidney removed last week. Doctors discovered the 62-year-old had cancer through routine blood tests earlier this year.

A Supreme Court news release said the doctors found no signs that the cancer had spread, and they expect a full and quick recovery.

Labarga already has resumed some of his duties of his duties as Chief Justice using remote equipment in his hospital room, which is filled with University of Florida gifts and balloons.

Court spokesman Craig Waters said Labarga should be discharged early this week.
