CHICAGO (AFX) - Hollinger International Inc., publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times and a number of community newspapers around Chicago, changed its name Monday to Sun-Times Media Group Inc.
The name change, approved by shareholders last month, allows the publishing company to distance itself from the legal problems associated with the Hollinger name. Its ticker symbol is now SVN instead of HLR.
"This change reflects our focus on delivering the highest quality local news and information in the Chicago area through our range of media properties, and also that our company is looking to our future rather than the past," Chief Executive Gordon Paris said in a statement.
The company, which once owned newspapers in Canada, London and Jerusalem, was previously under the control of media tycoon Conrad Black.
Black was ousted from the company after accusations that he and associates looted millions of dollars from its coffers. He has denied any wrongdoing. He is scheduled to go on trial in Chicago next March on fraud and racketeering charges.
Shares in the company fell 3 cents to close at $7.80 on the New York Stock Exchange. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be
