LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fire officials say a British Airways airplane was accelerating for takeoff when it caught fire on the runway at the Las Vegas airport, forcing the pilot to hit the brakes. Twenty seven people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, mostly from the evacuation slide.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Passengers on the British Airways jet whose engine caught fire just before takeoff in Las Vegas escaped with their lives — and some with their carry-ons, as well. While flight crews tell people to leave belongings behind, pilots say they seem increasingly inclined to grab whatever they brought on board. In public commentary, several pilots at major U.S. airlines slammed those pictured on the tarmac with bulky bags that could block exits or tear inflatable emergency slides.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Shootings have wounded four Las Vegas police officers in the last two months, but the Clark County sheriff says he doesn't believe there's a war on cops. Sheriff Joe Lombardo did say he's concerned about copycats committing crimes to seek attention and headlines. Two men have been arraigned on charges that could get them decades in prison in the wounding of one officer.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's new Education Savings Account program has attracted its second legal challenge, this time from seven parents who say the law will undermine public school funding. Education savings accounts allow parents to claim a portion of their child's state public education allotment and use it at a private school. Plaintiffs say the program violates a portion of the Nevada Constitution that prohibits using public school funds for purposes other than public schooling.
