WASHINGTON (AP) — The hole just keeps getting deeper for the Washington Nationals. After dropping the first two games of a key three-game series with the Mets, they are now six games back of New York in the National League East. Coming up tonight in the nation's capital is the final game of the series.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — In the lone day game in baseball the Cardinals and Cubs complete a three-game series in St. Louis. Chicago won the first two games and now trails the Cardinals by 6 ½ games in the National League Central. Chicago's success in St. Louis has helped Pittsburgh, as the Pirates are now just 4 1/2 games back of the Cards in the divisional race.

UNDATED (AP) — The tightest race in baseball is in the American League West, as the Astros have seen their lead drop to just one game over surging Texas. The Rangers have won seven of their last 10 games. Houston has lost six of its last 10 and tonight the Astros are in Oakland while the Rangers play in Seattle.

NEW YORK (AP) — Quarterfinal play takes place today and tonight at the U.S. Open. The two No. 2 seeds are in action as Simona Halep (HAL'-ehp) faces 20th seed Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh) and Roger Federer goes against 12th seed Richard Gasquet (ree-SHARD' gas-KAY'). The other matches feature the two fifth seeds as Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh) plays No. 26 Flavia Pennetta (FLAH'-vee-uh pehn-EHT'-uh) and Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK'-ah) faces 15th seed Kevin Anderson.

UNDATED — Ohio State was the unanimous choice yesterday to be the top team in The Associated Press Top-25 poll. The Buckeyes got all 61 first-place votes to lead Alabama, one of a record 10 schools in the Top-25 from the Southeastern Conference. Along with Ohio State, Michigan State at No. 5 is one of two Big Ten schools in the top five.
