WASHINGTON (AP) — Employees of federal contractors are about to get a Labor Day nod from President Barack Obama. He'll sign an executive order today requiring paid sick leave for employees of federal contractors, including 300,000 who currently receive none. Obama will also make a speech at a Boston labor event.
BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN'-geh-lah MEHR'-kuhl) says Germany will ensure that those who need protection receive it, as a continuing wave of migrants tries to get to Europe from the Middle East and Africa. She says all EU countries can help and French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') announced that his country would welcome 24,000 refugees. Hungary's prime minister says he's not prepared to pitch in.
JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.N. envoy to the Middle East is criticizing Israel's investigation into the July attack by suspected Jewish extremists that killed a Palestinian couple and their toddler. The mother died of her injuries early today and Envoy Nickolay Mladenov is calling for "justice." Israeli authorities have not yet arrested anyone or identified suspects.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan, which has frequently objected to U.S. drone strikes targeting militants, has used its own home-grown version for the first time, killing three "high profile" insurgents near the Afghan border. The army says the missiles hit a compound in the Waziristan tribal region. Pakistan first displayed the drone in March.
NEW YORK (AP) — With the pope visiting in September, there's good news for the cathedral at the center of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. The scaffolding is coming down and a three-year restoration project at St. Patrick's Cathedral, one of the country's most well-known churches, is coming to an end just in time. The entire exterior was covered in scaffolding and decades of dirt was cleaned, along with all the stained glass.
