OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — The University of Mississippi says more than $1 million has been raised for an endowed chair honoring outgoing Chancellor Dan Jones.

The university says in a news release Friday that the Daniel W. Jones, M.D. Faculty Chair has received donations from 400 alumni, faculty, staff members and friends.

It is the 25th endowed chair on the Oxford campus.

Jones, a 66-year-old physician, has led the university since June 2009 after serving six years as the university's vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine in Jackson.

In June, the University of Mississippi Medical Center said Jones will be leading clinical research at the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research.

Jones' contract as chancellor ends Sept. 14, but he plans to take leave beginning June 15.
