DENVER (AP) — Contact lens makers struggled to defend their pricing policies in a federal appeals case that could have wide-ranging effects on the $4 billion industry. At issue is a Utah law banning minimum prices for contact lenses. The nation's largest contact lens companies say the law was crafted to help a homegrown discounter, 1 800 Contacts. But a three-judge panel grilled the contact lens lawyers about why they don't simply stop doing business in Utah if they insist on price minimums.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Health officials say a Utah man in his 70s has died after contracting the plague earlier this month. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is the 12th case reported in the United States this year and fourth fatality. A chief of epidemiology with the CDC declined to release further details.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Prosecutors say a Utah teenager accused in the strangling death of a 12-year-old neighbor girl also sexually assaulted her. A judge says prosecutors have now filed a child rape charge against the boy, in addition to aggravated murder. Defense attorneys say they are investigating whether the teen is mentally competent to stand trial.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State officials are issuing an amended version of a first-ever state report on law enforcement activity to clarify there were fewer forcible entries last year than the original report showed. The revised report indicates police in Utah forced their way into houses and buildings 339 times last year, not 559 as originally reported. The report was ordered by lawmakers in 2014 to increase transparency.
