ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Smoke from hundreds of California wildfires is causing haze to settle across southern Utah, which is primed for its own wildfires.
Gusty winds and low humidity have combined to create critical fire weather conditions over the next few days.
A wildfire near Escalante has been contained, and there were no other fires burning along southern Utah or the Arizona Strip.
Color Country Fire information officer David Eaker says southern Utah has a lot of highly combustible cheat grass, and with the dry conditions, lightning strikes could ignite fires.
