SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Stonestreet Stable's Jess's Dream, the first foal out of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, was a dramatic winner of his long-awaited career debut in Monday's sixth race at Saratoga Race Course.
Sired by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, the 3-year-old Jess's Dream broke a step slow from post six under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez and spotted the field as many as 12 lengths before commencing his run.
With an eye-catching move on the far outside, Jess's Dream swept past six rivals in a steady stretch drive to edge Securitiz by a length, hitting the wire in 1:49.06 for 1 1/8 miles. He ran the last quarter-mile in 23.66 seconds and paid $8.50, $3.50 and $3.50.
Jess's Dream is named for late Kendall-Jackson wine magnate Jess Jackson, who owned both Curlin and Rachel Alexandra and long anticipated their mating. He died in 2011, a year before the colt was born.
