This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Problem solving is something Jay Garrett innately understands. So when he opened his business, Utah Pipebursting, he knew this is a specialty service nobody understands the importance until they need it.

Utah Pipebursting, based in South Ogden, thrives on the philosophy that educating potential clients is the best way to transform them into paying customers. Their specialty is replacing sewer laterals from someone's house to the main line in the street. The key is how they can do it without trenching and destroying someone's yard, the inspiration for their company motto, "Replace the pipe, not the yard".

The technique was developed around 40 years ago in England and came to Utah in 1995. Jay has been developing Pipebursting in Utah for about 15 years from working for a large construction company. Once they decided to start providing pipebursting, Jay knew how it worked and could sell it. Later, the company he worked for discontinued the service, but Jay knew the technique and in 2009, he started his own company, Utah Pipebursting, to provide it.

What the Utah Pipebursting team does is dig a small excavation next to the house and another out in the street where the pipe will connect to the main. Then they run a cable with a burst head through the pipe, effectively breaking down the damaged pipe and laying the new pipe in its path simultaneously. Once both holes are filled in, Jay says it's difficult to tell Utah Pipebursting has been there.

The reason it's so sigificant is because it saves money, yards and driveways. It's also faster and safer than any other technique available. These are all reasons why Utah Pipebursting has been named as Pluming Contractors Best of 2015 in Ogden. This is a great example of why Utah is listed in the top 5 on the U.S. Chamber Enterprising States report.
