SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A nonprofit organization's $50,000 gift to a Sioux Falls community college is helping students pay for remedial math and English classes this fall.
The Prep for Success Scholarship program at Killian Community College is funded by the de Groot Foundation.
Kilian president Mark Millage says the non-credit courses prepare students for college-level learning, but students often walk away rather than pay up to $1,000. Some 30 percent of South Dakota students entering college require remedial preparatory courses.
Millage says the gift helps remove the cost barrier for students willing to put forth the time and effort to succeed at a college level.
