TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana State University students started moving over the weekend into a new downtown Terre Haute apartment housing complex run by the school.
The student housing component of the complex, called 500 Wabash, has 75 apartments with 260 bedrooms. The top four floors of the five-story building, also known as Ellis Place, will house Indiana State University students.
A separate company is responsible for leasing the ground-floor as office or retail space.
Emily Potts, an Indiana State University junior majoring in psychology, is among the first students to reside in the building after moving in on Saturday.
"It's really cool that I get to break in a new apartment," she said of her four-bedroom unit on the third floor. "It's awesome. There are no words for it."
Dominique Kemp, a junior at Indiana State University, also moved into the building this weekend with the help of several family members.
"It looks nice, real furnished," she said, adding that she felt "excited, privileged, lucky" to live there.
Businesses in the area have welcomed the new student housing complex with open arms, the (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star (http://bit.ly/1fkCGZd ) reported. Brynlea Mattocks, a manager at nearby Roly Poly Sandwiches, believes the students' presence will help build downtown.
"I think it will help out every business tremendously," she said.
