Sandra Yi and Paul Nelson ReportingWoman's Mom: "He could have killed me. He could have killed him. He could have shot out the house."
A man looking to settle a fight ends up in the hospital, after he targets the wrong house. The homeowner took matters into his own hands when he found the suspect trying to break-in.
Woman: "I've never had any problems with him. He always came over here and played with my son."
That's why the situation still baffles her. She said it all started this morning when Danuel Baird showed up at her house, drunk.
Woman: "He came around the corner and he and one of his friends just rushed up on me."
She says Baird suddenly punched her in the face. Her mother was inside the house and heard the commotion.
Woman's Mom: "Nobody said anything but, 'Get on down the road. We don't need any problems.'"
They say Baird left, but came back. This time, with a gun.
Woman's Mom: "I heard him screaming and hollering still, and pointing that gun around. And pretty soon, I heard, 'Kaboom' and the curtains flew. I thought he had shot out the window. I was so scared, I was shaking so bad."
Her daughter saw the gun and ran to her neighbor's house. Baird went after her there, after getting his hands on another weapon.
Woman's Mom: "He was trying to break in his window with a tomahawk or axe or hatchet."
That's when the homeowner took matters into his own hands.
Woman's Mom: "And when he stuck his head through the window, the guy belted him with the baseball bat. While we were waiting for the cops to come, the neighbor came running over. The neighbor says, 'Oh man, call 911. Get the ambulance cause I think I just killed this guy.'"
Baird survived and was taken to the hospital. Once he's released, he'll go to jail.
Woman: "I think he did, especially with shooting a gun and knowing my three-year old was sleeping in there, I think he got what he deserved."
Baird will be charged with aggravated burglary, discharging a gun and misdemeanor assault.
Police will not pursue charges against the homeowner, because he was acting in self defense.
