SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Police in northwest Louisiana say they believe they know who the suspect is who shot and killed a police officer last night in Shreveport. Police say they're obtaining a warrant for his arrest. Police say the officer was responding to a report of a suspicious person inside a home, and the armed man apparently was inside the home, threatening to harm people. Police plan to release the name of the officer later this morning.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump takes center stage tonight as he joins nine other Republican presidential candidates in the first GOP debate of the 2016 campaign. Trump gets the center position because he's ranked No. 1 in recent public polls. And the other top-ranked Republicans join him. The seven least popular GOP candidates will take part in a pre-debate forum.
VIENNA (AP) — A think tank says satellite imagery of a site that Iran may have used to work on nuclear arms shows new construction work. A report by the Institute for Science and International Security says Iran may be trying once again to clean up the site before an inspection by the U.N.'s nuclear monitor, the International Atomic Energy Agency. But the new report is significant because the IAEA now plans to visit the Parchin site soon, as part of the deal between Iran and six world powers focused on limiting Iran's nuclear programs in exchange for the removal of sanctions.
ISMAILIA, Egypt (AP) — Egypt today is unveiling a major extension of the Suez Canal that its president has billed as a historic achievement which will boost the country's ailing economy after years of unrest. An elaborate ceremony will be hosted by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi (AHB'-del fat-AH' el-SEE'-see) and attended by foreign dignitaries amid tight security. Economists and shippers have questioned the value of the $8.5 billion project, saying the increased traffic and revenues the government is hoping for will depend more on the growth of world trade than the size of the crucial waterway.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Four police officers in Southern California have been arrested on suspicion of child cruelty for allegedly abusing more than a dozen boys and girls at a boot camp. Authorities say two officers from Huntington Park and two from South Gate were drill instructors at a weeklong boot camp for troubled youth that was held in May at the National Guard base in San Luis Obispo. Parents say their children reported being slapped, kicked, stomped and beaten bloody at times. One boy returned home with a broken hand.
