CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The father of Colorado theater shooter James Holmes has taken the stand as the defense tries to persuade jurors to spare his son's life. Robert Holmes has attended every day of his son's trial along with his wife, Arlene, but this is the first time he has testified. The couple has not spoken publicly during the trial. The jury is considering whether James Holmes should serve life in prison without parole or be executed for killing 12 people and injuring 70 others at a crowded movie premiere in 2012.

HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — Texas authorities have released more video of Sandra Bland during her three days in jail. A judge today said several hours of jail footage is being distributed to the media, partially in response to conspiracy theories about her death. He says these allegations have prompted death threats against county officials and that the most serious have been turned over to the FBI. Bland was found dead in her cell July 13, three days after her arrest following being stopped for not signaling a lance change. Authorities have ruled the death a suicide.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans on the House committee investigating the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, say there's no agreement with Hillary Rodham Clinton over her possible appearance before the panel. This, despite a State Department pledge to produce 5,000 new pages of documents. A spokesman for the committee chairman, Republican Trey Gowdy, says "nothing has changed" since Saturday, when Gowdy balked at an announcement from Clinton's presidential campaign that she would testify on October 22nd.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian chief is warning against calling a proposed buffer along the Turkey-Syrian border a "safe zone," saying it could risk attracting vulnerable people to an area without "sufficient protection." Turkish and U.S. officials are discussing the creation of a safe zone near Turkey's border, which would be cleared of Islamic State group presence.

NEW YORK (AP) — Strong earnings from Ford and other companies and steadier markets overseas have sent U.S. stock indexes to solid gains. The Dow gained 189 points. Asian markets closed with modest losses today, a day after the Shanghai stock index plunged more than 8 percent.
