Andrew Adams reportingThe creators of a controversial monkey sock puppet that looks like Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama are responding to accusations of racism.

Dave Lawson says he and his wife are not racist. They were planning a whole line of sock monkeys, even one for Republican presidential candidate John McCain. "'JohnnyMcSock' is one of the characters that we'd planned to introduce," he said.

The Lawsons also planned to throw in some international bad guys, like Iran's leader. "We're looking at producing a ‘ASockMadinejad,'" Lawson said. "We just refuse to live in the past. We have too many things to do, and we just can't allow ourselves to go there any longer."

Lawson tells KSL's "Doug Wright Show" he and his wife are looking at options to move forward with production.

"TheSockObama" has even brought death threats, but Lawson says he has protection.
