HARTFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — After 31 years, the federal government has removed a former waste disposal site in southwestern Michigan from the list of the nation's most polluted places.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday it's taken the Burrows Sanitation site off the Superfund list of hazardous locations.
The 10-acre site is in Van Buren County's Hartford Township, about 15 miles south-southeast of South Haven.
The EPA says operators disposed of plating sludge, waste coolant and oil there. The agency put the site on the Superfund list in 1984.
The EPA says it and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources removed 300 cubic yards of contaminated soil and sediment and installed a groundwater cleanup system.
The EPA says environmental monitoring "shows that the cleanup has been effective."
