SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert announced Wednesday that Rep. Jon Cox, R-Ephraim, is resigning his seat in the Legislature to take over as the governor's communications director.
Cox will replace Marty Carpenter, who is leaving the administration to work for the governor's re-election campaign. Herbert, a Republican, is seeking a second full term in office in 2016.
The governor said Cox, first appointed to represent District 58 in 2013, "has a strong understanding of the broad spectrum of issues facing our state and the goals we have as an administration."
House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper, said Cox has been "a valuable asset" to the House and "worked tirelessly to make good policy better." The speaker said he has no doubt Cox will "take that desire and resolve to the governor's office."
A replacement for Cox will be selected by GOP delegates in his Sanpete and Juab counties district and appointed by the governor to serve the remainder of his term. Cox also would have been up for re-election in 2016.
