ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (TSEE'-prahs) says banks in his country will remain closed for an unspecified period and restrictions will be placed on bank withdrawals. Anxious Greeks have been lining up at ATMs to withdraw cash after bailout talks faltered. Yesterday Greece's European partners refused to extend the current bailout, which runs out on Tuesday. And today the European Central Bank declined to increase emergency credit to Greek banks.
ROME (AP) — Italy's coast guard says at least 2,900 migrants have been rescued today from 21 boats launched from Libya by smugglers. The rescues were carried out by military vessels from Italy, Spain, Ireland, Britain as well as a boat run by personnel from humanitarian organizations.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — For the third time in eight months, an unmanned cargo ship loaded with supplies for the International Space Station has failed in spectacular fashion. A SpaceX rocket broke apart less than three minutes after it was launched today, sending a shower of debris into the Atlantic Ocean. Its cargo included replacements for items lost in two previous failed supply flights, and a first-of-its-kind docking port.
MALONE, N.Y. (AP) — An autopsy report says the escaped inmate killed by authorities in northern New York on Friday was shot three times in the head. And a coroner who examined his body says Richard Matt was in surprisingly good shape for a man who spent three weeks on the run — well-fed, clean and dressed for the elements. Hundreds of law enforcement personnel are still searching for David Sweat, who escaped with Matt on June 6.
CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A survey finds the average price of gasoline has dropped 2 cents over the past two weeks to $2.85. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg says the decline comes amid a 42-cent jump recorded over the previous nine weeks.
