SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Those in the organic food and products business in northern Nevada say they may create a private certification process after the state voted to eliminate its own program.

The Nevada Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1HkZm6P) that officials decided to end the Nevada Department of Agriculture's Organic Certification program, effective June 2016.

On Tuesday, a group of organic businesses, including growers, producers and sellers, met to consider creating a private certification program.

There are none based in Nevada and advocates say out-of-state ones charge travel expenses that may be prohibitive for a small operation.

The state said its program was running on a deficit.

Only 45 of the 80 certified organic businesses in Nevada get their approvals through the state. The organic certification has been an option since 1997.
