LAS VEGAS (AP) — A California judge has ordered casino mogul Steve Wynn to pay $422,380 in legal fees and costs to the Wall Street hedge fund manager Wynn sued for defamation.

Last week District Judge William H. Orrick reduced the amount James Chanos requested — $590,699 — saying he didn't provide materials justifying high hourly-rates for paralegals and the large number of attorney hours.

A Wynn spokesman declined to comment.

Orrick dismissed Wynn's case in March under California's anti-SLAPP statute that aims to stop lawsuits stifling free speech. The judge said statements by Chanos about Wynn and Wynn Resorts Ltd. at a UC Berkeley academic conference were not defamatory.

Wynn backed a state law this year aimed at weakening Nevada's anti-SLAPP provisions. Lawmakers passed a watered-down version retaining most of the same protections.
