BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A man who slipped and fell about 12 feet while climbing Donut Falls, landing on his back, was taken to the hospital in serious condition Saturday.

The 21-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, was hiking with a group of about eight men from an LDS singles' ward in Salt Lake City, said Unified police detective Ken Hansen. The man was climbing above the falls about 8:30 p.m. when he slipped on the wet rocks and fell into the water.

Initially, friends said the man couldn't move, so they pulled him out of the water, Hansen said. The man was conscious and alert when rescuers arrived.

When crews from Unified police, Unified Fire Authority and search and rescue got to the scene, they set up a rope rescue, almost like a zip-line, Hansen said, to safely transport the victim off the mountain without further injuring his back. He was taken by ambulance to IMC Hospital.
