CROWLEY, La. (AP) — Mosquito Control Contractors Inc. has confirmed a case of West Nile Virus has been found in Acadia Parish.
Glenn Stokes with MCCI says a chicken tested positive for the virus near Maxie, north of Crowley.
The Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/1QIwOdF ) the positive test has triggered the company's West Nile protocol of spraying, inspection and citizen advisories.
In a news release Friday, Stokes said the chicken was one of 16 "sentinel chickens" located strategically around the parish to provide an early warning if a virus carried by mosquitoes enters the region. The virus does not harm the chicken and only provides telltale antibodies that only appear when West Nile Virus is present.
This is the second confirmed case found in a sentinel chicken in Louisiana. The other was in Terrebonne Parish.
