CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Police in Charleston, South Carolina, say the suspect in a fatal shooting at a historic black church is charged with nine counts of murder and a weapon charge. A bond hearing for Dylann Roof is scheduled for this afternoon. Roof is unlikely to appear in court, as most initial hearings are conducted over a video link with the county jail.
BEIJING (AP) — The shooting deaths at a South Carolina church are getting plenty of attention in other countries. In China, the official news agency says the shooting reflects what it calls "the U.S. government's inaction on rampant gun violence as well as the growing racial hatred in the country." At the University of Sydney in Australia, the head of a project that compares gun laws around the world says, "We don't understand America's need for guns."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is issuing new rules intended to improve fuel efficiency for medium and heavy-duty trucks and cut pollution blamed for global warming. The proposed standards are expected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by about 1 billion metric tons and cut fuel costs by about $170 billion over the lifetime of vehicles sold under the rule. And they're supposed to reduce oil consumption by up to 1.8 billion barrels. The long-expected rules were announced a day after Pope Francis issued a teaching document calling for the world to take action to slow climate change.
DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit woman who's accused of killing two of her children and storing the bodies in a freezer says she committed the crimes and wants to plead guilty to murder. Mitchelle Blair made her remarks today after a judge found she's mentally competent to stand trial. She says she doesn't need any more time to think about her defense. Blair says she would accept the death penalty if Michigan had one. The bodies of a 13-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son were discovered in Blair's home freezer during an eviction in March.
MASSENA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say 30 people aboard a cruise ship have been injured when the vessel crashed into a wall while entering a lock on the St. Lawrence Seaway in upstate New York. The U.S. Coast Guard says the 286-foot vessel was headed from Montreal to Toronto when it hit a wall in the Eisenhower Lock in Massena (muh-SEE'-nuh), near the Canadian border, last night. There were 274 French passengers and crew aboard. Two of them remain hospitalized.
