CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A Duke University researcher and dean is the next provost at the University of Virginia.

U.Va. President Teresa A. Sullivan on Wednesday named Thomas C. Katsouleas to the post, effective Aug. 17. He'll also hold the title of executive vice president.

Katsouleas succeeds John D. Simon, who will become president of Lehigh University on July 1.

At Duke, Katsouleas is dean of engineering. U.Va. says he has led one of the fastest-rising engineering schools in the nation and has reshaped engineering education.

Katsouleas will be the chief academic officer at U.Va., advancing the initiatives of U.Va.'s five-year strategic plan. He'll also oversee the 11 schools of the university, the U.Va. library and the art museum, among others.
