FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky officials are urging people to avoid contact with the water along a stretch of the Levisa Fork in eastern Kentucky due to high E. coli levels.
The warning Friday comes a month after Kentucky was notified by Virginia about a leak that poured millions of gallons of sewage into the Levisa Fork and across the state line into Kentucky.
The warning from Kentucky water and health officials covers a stretch of the Levisa Fork from the Virginia line to the headwaters of Fishtrap Lake. Officials warn contact with the water may increase the risk of contracting diarrheal illnesses and other infectious diseases.
Officials say recent testing showed E. coli concentrations exceeded water quality standards for human contact. They say testing done last month did not show such elevated E. coli levels.
