GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) — The city of Greenville will let the local school system keep about $140,000 a year from casino taxes.
The Delta Democrat-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1RMMUjy ) the city council voted 4-2 to continue the allocation to the school system. The schools get about 14.2 percent of casino tax proceeds.
The city's financial committee had recommended discontinuing the school district's allocation to help balance the city's budget.
Mayor John Cox says the city may be running a $1 million deficit come this summer when it's time to prepare the fiscal year 2015-16 budget.
Councilman Errick Simmons says when gambling was legalized in Mississippi in 1992, part of the reasoning was so proceeds could go to schools. He says discontinuing the allocation "would be a slap in the face of the public schools."
